24-Hour Natural Pest Control
Watching your vegetables being devoured by all manner of creepy crawlies is one of the depressing things about gardening.
Gardening organically is always a challenge when it comes to insect control. Garlic sprays, row cover, wood ashes and the like all help, but what if you could have a team of 24 hour watchdogs in your gardens. Attack dogs, ready and willing to take on and eat any bug that dares enter their domain?
That is what we're attempting to do here at the homestead by re-introducing praying mantis' to our garden. We used to have quite a few around, but being insects, these guardians of kale are vulnerable to neonicitinoids both from direct spraying and from eating bugs which have been exposed to this deadly insecticide.
While we'd love to have Mantis' hanging around naturally that's unfortunately not the case. So, we purchased an egg case from our friends at Winona Gardens and have installed it in a tree near our veg patch.
It came in a white mesh bag that you just hang 3-5 ft off the ground in part sun/ part shade conditions. Now we wait 2-8 weeks for our watchdogs to take up the fight!!
Here's what the package looks like, in case you decide you'd like your own bug-eaters to help you out.

We'll report back on our progress in future posts.
